Der Waipoua Forest ist ein Kauriwald an der Westküste der Northland-Region auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands.
Von allen Kauriwäldern Neuseelands ist dieser Wald, der sich nördlich von Dargaville befindet, der bekannteste. Der Waipoua-Wald ist das größte verbleibende Stück ursprünglichen Waldes in Northland und ein uraltes grünes Paradies aus riesigen Bäumen und seltenen Vögeln.
Die Straße, die durch den Wald führt, bleibt unvergesslich durch die natürlichen Tore, die von riesigen Kauri-Bäumen geschaffen werden, sowie den bunten Farnen, die die Straßenränder säumen.
Ein fünfminütiger Spaziergang vom Straßenrand führt Sie zum Fuß von Tāne Mahuta, wahrscheinlich dem größten Baum, den Sie je gesehen haben.
Tāne Mahuta ist der größte Kauri-Baum des Landes. Er ist ungefähr 2.000 Jahre alt und wächst immer noch. Mit fast 18 Metern bis zum ersten Ast und einem Durchmesser von 4,4 Metern wird Tāne Mahuta zu Recht „Der Herr des Waldes“ genannt.
Ein weiterer bedeutender Baum im Waipoua Forest ist Te Matua Ngahere – „Vater des Waldes“. Es wird geschätzt, dass dieser Baum zwischen 2.500 und 3.000 Jahre alt ist.
