Punakaiki ist eine kleine Gemeinde an der Westküste der Südinsel, zwischen Westport und Greymouth. Die Gemeinde liegt am Rande des Paparoa Nationalparks.
Die Pancake Rocks sind ein sehr beliebtes Touristenziel. Am Dolomite Point südlich des Hauptdorfes kann man eine Kalksteinlandschaft mit pfannkuchenartigen Felsformationen, Geysiren und Strömungspools auf einem kurzen, gepflasterten Wanderweg erkunden.
Dieser wetterunabhängige Wanderweg führt durch die kuriosen Kalksteinformationen der „Pancake Rocks“ und Geysire.
Die Geysire entstehen durch eine Mischung aus komprimiertem Wasser und Luft aus Höhlen unterhalb der Oberfläche, die nach oben gedrückt werden. Sie erzeugen eine riesige Sprühwand und sind bei Hochwasser und südwestlichem Wellengang am eindrucksvollsten.
Spektakuläre Ausblicke, geologische Kuriositäten, Küstenwälder, reiche Vogelwelt und Meeresbewohner sind Höhepunkte entlang dieses Wanderweges.
