Opononi wurde Mitte der 1950er Jahre berühmt durch einen zahmen Delfin. Opo, der es den Kindern ermöglichte, auf seinem Rücken zu reiten, war landesweite Nachrichten.
Ein weißer Sandstrand erstreckt sich bis zum Opononi Wharf. Von hier aus können Sie ein Wassertaxi zu den riesigen Sanddünen auf der anderen Seite des Hafens nehmen.
Dünen-Surfen mit Boogie-Boards ist ein Nervenkitzel, der Sie sandig, aber äußerst zufrieden zurücklässt. Von Kajakfahren bis Jetski fahren bietet Omapere und Opononi auch eine Vielzahl spannender Wasseraktivitäten.
Im Herzen der Zwillingssiedlung finden Sie Manea Footprints of Kupe, ein Māori-Kulturzentrum, das die Geschichte des großen Vorfahren Kupe durch ein 4D-Sinneserlebnis erzählt.
