Berühmt von Rudyard Kipling als das „achte Weltwunder“ beschrieben, ist Milford Sound ein atemberaubender Fjord im Südwesten der Südinsel Neuseelands.
Er wurde wie alle modernen Fjorde während der Eiszeit von Gletschern geformt. Doch seine Majestät und das dramatische Umfeld der umliegenden Berge sind kaum zu übertreffen. Besonders bekannt ist Mitre Peak, der hoch über dem Fjord thront, sowie Regenwälder und Wasserfälle wie die Stirling Falls und Bowen Falls, die mit beeindruckender Kraft die steilen Seiten des Fjords hinabstürzen.
Wenn es in Milford Sound regnet – was oft der Fall ist – vervielfachen sich die Wasserfälle mit atemberaubender Wirkung. Unabhängig vom Wetter ist es wirklich ein überwältigender Anblick.
Bootstouren sind eine beliebte Möglichkeit, die tiefschwarzen Gewässer dieses unberührten Naturwunders zu erkunden. Der Fjord beherbergt Kolonien von Pelzrobben, Pinguinen und Delfinen. Das Milford Discovery Centre und das Unterwasser-Observatorium bieten einen Blick auf seltene schwarze Korallen und andere Meereslebewesen.
