Die Fahrt von Wanaka in Richtung Westküste führt durch die spektakuläre Landschaft des Haast Pass.
Makarora, am nördlichen Ende des Lake Wanaka, ist ein Ausgangspunkt für mehrere mehrtägige Wanderungen im Mount Aspiring Nationalpark. Es markiert auch den Beginn der Fahrt über den Pass.
Eine Reihe kürzerer Wanderungen beginnen am Straßenrand zwischen Makarora und Haast. Diese führen durch Regenwald zu atemberaubenden Wasserfällen. Beliebte Wanderungen führen zu den Blue Pools, den Fantail Falls, den Thunder Creek Falls und den Roaring Billy Falls.
An den Gates of Haast Gorge halten viele Reisende an, um das wilde Wasser zu fotografieren, das über die Flussfelsen stürzt.
Die Becken, die durch die Hawea- und Wanaka-Gletscher ausgekratzt wurden, liegen heute unter den Gewässern des Lake Hawea und des Lake Wanaka. Zwei Arme der Gletscher vereinigten sich an einem schmalen Landstrich namens The Neck, den man auf der Fahrt nach Makarora überquert.
