Tief im Zentrum der Nordinsel liegt ein uralter Wald. Der Whirinaki Forest ist einer der letzten prähistorischen Regenwälder der Welt und hat definitiv etwas Mystisches an sich.
Whirinaki ist die Heimat von mächtigen Bäumen und seltenen einheimischen Vögeln. Einhundertfünfundfünfzig Kilometer hervorragende Wander-, Trekking- und Mountainbikestrecken bieten etwas für jedes Niveau.
Bestaunen Sie die beeindruckenden Rimu-, Tōtara-, Kahikatea-, Matai- und Miro-Bäume, die in den Himmel ragen. Einige dieser majestätischen Bäume ragen 215 Meter in die Höhe. Dieser Podokarp-Wald (Zapfenwald) beherbergt 1.000 Jahre alte Bäume, was bedeutet, dass sie etwa zu der Zeit gepflanzt wurden, als Dschingis Khan in der Mongolei einfiel!
