Whangamomona wurde von Lonely Planet als ein “wichtiges Highlight auf dem Forgotten World Highway” bezeichnet. Es ist ein malerisches Dorf 45 Minuten östlich von Stratford auf der Nordinsel.
Whangamomona ist berühmt für seine reiche Geschichte im Grenzgebiet. Aus Frustration über die lokalen Räte riefen die Einwohner 1989 die “Republik Whangamomona” aus und hielten ihre eigenen Präsidentschaftswahlen ab. Der berühmte “Tag der Republik” findet alle zwei Jahre im Januar statt und wird von Tausenden von Besuchern gefeiert.
