Der Waipoua Forest ist ein Kauri-Wald an der Westküste von Northland. Von allen neuseeländischen Kauriwäldern ist keiner berühmter. Der Highway durch den Wald zeichnet sich durch natürliche Tore aus riesigen Kauri-Bäumen und einen von bunten Farnen gesäumten Straßenrand aus.
Waipoua ist das größte verbliebene Stück Urwald in Northland und eine uralte grüne Welt mit hoch aufragenden Bäumen und seltenen Vögeln. Ein fünfminütiger Spaziergang vom Straßenrand aus bringt Sie zum Fuß des Tāne Mahuta, dem wahrscheinlich größten Baum, den Sie je gesehen haben.
Tāne Mahuta ist der größte Kauri-Baum des Landes. Er ist etwa 2.000 Jahre alt und wächst immer noch. Mit einer Höhe von fast 18 Metern bis zum ersten Ast und einem Durchmesser von 4,4 Metern wird Tāne Mahuta zu Recht als “Herr des Waldes” bezeichnet.
Ein weiterer bedeutender Baum im Waipoua Forest ist Te Matua Ngahere – “Vater des Waldes”. Sein Alter wird auf 2.500 bis 3.000 Jahre geschätzt.
