Twizel ist die größte Stadt im Mackenzie District der Südinsel. Sie wurde in den 1960er Jahren eigens als Wohnort für die Arbeiter des Upper Waitaki Power Scheme erbaut. Heute ist sie ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für Bergsteigen, Kajakfahren, Mountainbiking, Skifahren, Pferdetrekking und Wandern.
Die Stadt liegt in einem Becken, das den Bezirk charakterisiert, umgeben von Kanälen, Seen und weiten Ebenen und überragt von den Südalpen. Die Gipfel und Wanderwege des Mount Cook National Park sind nicht weit entfernt.
Angeln Sie in den atemberaubenden aqua-blauen Gewässern der Region nach Lachsen und Forellen. Wenn Sie kein Glück haben, besuchen Sie die Lachsfarm und kaufen Sie einen Fisch – frisch oder geräuchert.
Im Sommer verdreifacht sich die Einwohnerzahl von Twizel, da sich die Ferienhäuser und Campingplätze mit Neuseeländern füllen, die hier Urlaub machen.
