Taumarunui liegt am Adventure Highway (State Highway 4) am Beginn des Forgotten World Highway im King Country der Nordinsel.
Taumarunui gehört zum Ruapehu-Distrikt und liegt zentral an einer schönen Panoramastraße mit Blick auf den Mt. Ruapehu und den Whanganui River. Von hier aus erreicht man den Whanganui National Park, den Pureora Timber Trail und den zum Weltnaturerbe zählenden Tongariro National Park.
