Piopio ist eine kleine Stadt im Waitomo District. Sie liegt am State Highway 3, etwa 23 km von Te Kuiti entfernt.
Nur 30 Minuten von den weltberühmten Waitomo-Höhlen entfernt, bietet das Piopio-Gebiet auch dramatische Kalksteinformationen, Waldspaziergänge und Fahrradrouten. Am bekanntesten ist sie wohl als Drehort für “Der Hobbit: Eine unerwartete Reise”. Die Denize Bluffs wurden für zahlreiche Szenen genutzt, darunter auch der Trollshaw Forest.
