Omarama ist eine kleine Stadt an der Kreuzung der State Highways 8 und 83, die in einem breiten Becken zwischen Bergketten liegt. Am südlichen Ende des Mackenzie-Beckens auf der Südinsel gelegen, zieht es Segelflieger und Angler an. Sie kommen wegen des offenen Himmels und der fischreichen Flüsse.
Die Segelflieger kommen hierher, um in den weiten Himmel zu schweben. Angler jagen in den schnell fließenden Flüssen nach reichlich Fisch. Omarama liegt im Waitaki-Distrikt, in der Nähe des gleichnamigen Flusses, und der Ahuriri River ist nicht weit entfernt im Norden.
