Opononi bietet Strandleben im Herzen des Hokianga-Hafens im Norden der neuseeländischen Nordinsel. In Opononi und dem nahe gelegenen Omapere kann man das Strandleben genießen, die Geschichten von Kupe hören und die riesigen Dünen und den Hafen von Hokianga rauf- und runterfahren.
Opononi wurde Mitte der 1950er Jahre durch einen zahmen Delfin berühmt. Opo, der Kinder auf seinem Rücken reiten ließ, machte landesweit Schlagzeilen.
Ein weißer Sandstrand erstreckt sich bis zur Opononi-Werft. Hier können Sie ein Wassertaxi zu den riesigen Sanddünen auf der anderen Seite des Hafens nehmen. Dünensurfen auf Boogieboards ist ein Nervenkitzel, der Sie sandig, aber äußerst zufrieden zurücklässt.
Vom Kajakfahren bis zum Jetskifahren bieten Opononi und (die Zwillingssiedlung) Omapere auch eine Reihe aufregender Wasseraktivitäten.
Im Herzen der Zwillingssiedlung befindet sich Manea Footprints of Kupe, ein Māori-Kulturzentrum, das die Geschichte des großen Vorfahren Kupe durch ein 4D-Sinneserlebnis erzählt.
