Versteckt in den bewaldeten Ausläufern der Südalpen liegt die gemütliche Gemeinde Fox Glacier. Fox” liegt im Westland Tai Poutini National Park an der Westküste der Südinsel von Aoteaoroa und konzentriert sich auf einen 13 Kilometer langen maritimen Gletscher der gemäßigten Zone.
Fox Glacier beschreibt sowohl den Gletscher als auch das nahe gelegene Dorf. Der Ort bietet Gletscherwanderungen, Flüge, landschaftlich reizvolle Spaziergänge und Glühwürmchenhöhlen nur einen kurzen Spaziergang vom Ortszentrum entfernt. Außerdem gibt es eine gute Auswahl an Cafés und Restaurants.
Wie sein Zwillingsbruder Franz Josef fällt der Gletscher von den Südalpen hinab in den gemäßigten Regenwald, nur 300 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel.
In der Nähe von Fox liegt der wunderschöne Lake Matheson, einer der meistfotografierten Seen Neuseelands. Bei klarem Wetter spiegelt er den Mount Cook wider und ist ein beliebtes Motiv auf vielen Werbefotos für Neuseeland. Der kurze Spaziergang, der den See umrundet, ist ein Muss für Einheimische und bietet zahlreiche Fototermine.
