Cape Palliser ist eine Landzunge an der Südküste der neuseeländischen Nordinsel. Es ist der südlichste Punkt der Nordinsel. Hier gibt es Robben, herrliche Wanderungen und einen der spektakulärsten Leuchttürme des Landes.
Diese große alte Dame von einem Leuchtturm aus Gusseisen steht hier seit 1897 auf den Klippen. Und sie leuchtet immer noch kräftig. Erklimmen Sie die 253 Stufen, um ihn aus der Nähe zu sehen. Aber denken Sie auch an die frühen Leuchtturmwärter, die Öl- und Kerosinkanister über einen unbefestigten Weg hinaufschleppen mussten, bevor die Stufen in Betrieb gingen.
Am Kap befindet sich auch die größte Pelzrobbenkolonie der Nordinsel. Wenn Sie von November bis Januar hier sind, können Sie vielleicht sogar ein paar Jungtiere sehen.
Dieser Teil Neuseelands hat auch eine reiche Geschichte der frühen Maori-Besiedlung. Archäologen glauben, dass sich die Maori um 1300 hier niederließen.
