Das Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre ist eine Gemeinschaftseinrichtung, die an sieben Tagen in der Woche für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich ist. Es ist ein Zentrum für Information, Bildung und Forschung über Küstenvögel. Ufervögel sind hier das ganze Jahr über anzutreffen, aber die meisten von ihnen kommen von Januar bis März.
Das Shorebird Centre wurde 1990 eröffnet. Eigentümer und Betreiber ist der 1975 gegründete Pūkorokoro Miranda Naturalists’ Trust. In diesem Zentrum können Sie eine Fülle von Informationen über Vögel und andere lokale Themen durch interaktive Ausstellungen und Vorträge sowie Projekte zur Wiederherstellung von Lebensräumen mit Möglichkeiten zur freiwilligen Mitarbeit einsehen. Vom Zentrum aus können Sie über begehbare Stege zu drei Vogelverstecken gelangen.
Das Shorebird Center ist von 9 bis 17 Uhr geöffnet, aber Sie können die Vögel immer dann beobachten, wenn die Flut da ist. Die beste Zeit, um die Vögel zu beobachten, ist innerhalb von zwei Stunden bei und nach der Flut. Sobald die Flut zurückgeht, gehen die Vögel weit hinaus auf das Watt, um zu fressen.
