Ohinemutu ist ein lebendiges Māori-Dorf an den Ufern des Lake Rotorua. Nur 10 Gehminuten vom Stadtzentrum Rotoruas entfernt, war Ohinemutu seit den 1870er Jahren das Hauptzentrum Rotoruas. Es ist die Heimat des Stammes Ngāti Whakaue, eines Unterstammes der Te Arawa waka (Kanu), die um 1350 aus der pazifischen Heimat Hawaiiki nach Aotearoa kamen.
Schon in den 1870er Jahren besuchten Touristen, darunter auch königliche Hoheiten, diese geschäftige Siedlung. Anschließend besuchten sie die Pink und White Terrassen am Lake Tarawera oder erlebten die heilenden Gewässer von Rotorua.
Der Standort wurde wegen seiner Lage am See und der reichlich vorhandenen geothermischen Energie gewählt. Energie, die zum Kochen, Baden und Heizen genutzt wird. Heute kann man durch dieses lebendige Dorf spazieren, um die Kochvorrichtungen über den Heißwasserschächten und die Badehütten im Freien zu besichtigen.
