Das Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre hat sich seit seiner Gründung im August 1992 um Tausende von Vögeln gekümmert. Die Gründer haben über 30 Jahre Erfahrung in der Arbeit mit einheimischen Vögeln und leiten das Zentrum mit Hilfe eines kleinen Ausschusses von Freiwilligen. Mehr als 60 % der Vögel, die in das Zentrum gebracht werden, werden erfolgreich ausgewildert.
Das Zentrum nimmt verletzte eingeführte, einheimische und einheimische Vögel auf. Und wenn möglich, werden die Vögel wieder gesund gepflegt, um sie in die freie Wildbahn zu entlassen.
Ein besonderer Teil des Zentrums ist die Bayer-Brutanlage und das Kiwi-Auffanggehege. In dieser Einrichtung werden in freier Wildbahn gefundene Eier ausgebrütet und verletzte Kiwis aufgepäppelt. In der Region Whangarei sind Hunde die Hauptursache für den Tod und die Verletzung von Kiwis, gefolgt von Kraftfahrzeugen.
