Te Kainga Marire – Maori für “friedliches Lager” – ist ein kunstvoll angelegter innerstädtischer Garten. In einem ehemals verkrauteten Tal in New Plymouth gelegen, ahmt er die natürliche Umgebung Neuseelands nach. Und der RNZIH New Zealand Gardens Trust hält ihn für einen der wenigen privaten Gärten von internationaler Bedeutung.
Der Garten umgibt das Haus der Familie Poletti-Clarkson. Er schmiegt sich an ein Reststück des Sumpfwaldes an der Küste und an eine Pa-Stelle und erstreckt sich bis zum benachbarten Flussreservat und dem Te Henui-Wanderweg, der zur Stadt und zum Meer führt.
Ein harmonischer Garten, der subtile Texturen und Farben mit eigenwilligen Formen verbindet. Üppige Farne, Feuchtgebietspflanzen, alpine Schätze und einheimische Bäume bilden hier einen Mikrokosmos der neuseeländischen Landschaft. Dies ist ein Juwel von Mittelerde.
