Die Akaunui Farm Homestead liegt in der Nähe von Ashburton auf dem Lande. Das historische Backsteinhaus mit großzügigen Veranden und einem überdachten Balkon fällt als erstes ins Auge, wenn Sie die Farm über die von Hecken gesäumte Zufahrt betreten.
Das Haus wurde 1905 für Edward Grigg gebaut, einen Sohn eines der ersten Kolonialbauern in Canterbury, John Grigg. Grigg war ein Großbauer, der Schafe und Ackerbau betrieb, und der Hof war ursprünglich Teil des riesigen Longbeach-Anwesens der Familie Grigg.
Das Land ist jedoch seit langem im Besitz der jetzigen Eigentümer, Di und Ian Mackenzie. Auf den 600 Hektar von Akaunui werden Gemüse und Getreide angebaut sowie Schafe und Milchkühe gehalten.
Ian war zuvor Vorsitzender für Getreide und Saatgut bei den Federated Farmers of New Zealand. Di hingegen kümmert sich um den Garten, der ursprünglich von Alfred William Buxton (1872-1950) angelegt wurde. Die für Buxton typischen Gartenelemente wie die geschwungenen Zufahrten und die Umrandung durch Waldbäume sind auf dem Grundstück zu sehen.
